Santa Monica-Malibu Unified School District
Vision Statement: As a community of learners,
the Santa Monica-Malibu Unified School District work together in
a nurturing environment to help students be visionary, versatile
thinkers; resourceful, life-long learners; effective, multi-lingual
communicators and global citizens. The District is a richly varied
community that values the contributions of all its members. It exists
to prepare all students in their pursuit of academic achievement
and personal health and to support and encourage them in their development
of intellectual, artistic, technological, physical and social expression.
The District's diverse student body of 12,600 are 58% White, non-Hispanic,
42% Minority and speak more than 71 languages. They attend ten elementary
schools (grades K-5), three middle schools (grades 6-8), three high
schools (grades 9-12) and an alternative school (grades K-8). The
District also provides pre-school services and adult education programs.
The District has long been at the forefront of educational reform,
and the students continue to score among the highest in Los Angeles
County on standardized tests. The Academic Performance Index (API)
growth report shows that nearly all District schools have API scores
above 800. The growth pattern in API signals strong improvement
in teaching and leadership. This is what the community expects and
is getting. More than 90% of the District's high school graduates
continue their education at institutions of higher learning. Professional
development is a high priority in the District and many of its 700+
teachers hold masters and doctoral degrees.
The District is fortunate to be part of a committed
community. Parents are active in the District in many ways, including
as members of the PTA and District Advisory Committees, and as classroom
volunteers. The business community adopted schools, donated funds
and services and, acknowledged the extraordinary work of students
and staff members. The cities of Santa Monica and Malibu continue
to contribute to the schools with programs and funding. For more
