has 84,084 residents, with a median age of 39.3 years. There are
47,862 housing units with an average household size of 1.83 and
an average family size of 2.80. Thirty percent of the housing units
are owner-occupied. Median family income in Santa Monica is $75,989,
while per capita income is $42,874.¹
Geography
Santa Monica is 8.5 square miles in size with
a mix of residential, commercial and industrial buildings. It is
in Los Angeles County and is bordered on three sides by the City
of Los Angeles, and on the west by the Pacific Ocean.¹
Labor Force
There are 50,823 people in Santa Monica's labor
force. Sixty percent work in management, professional or related
occupations, 23% in sales and office occupations, 9% in the service
industry, and the remainder in other occupations. Seventy-four percent
work for public or private companies, 10% for the government and
15% are self-employed or work in unincorporated businesses.¹

Santa Monica is a charter city incorporated in the County of Los
Angeles. It was founded 1875 and incorporated 1886. It has a Council-Manager
form of government. The City's motto is "Populus felix in urbe
felici" - "Fortunate people in a fortunate land."
