IRON’s “Fighting Childhood Obesity” campaign

Is there a parent that doesn’t want to see their child grow up strong and healthily? Now with the national health epidemic of childhood obesity, that dream seems to be in danger!  This epidemic has become huge as a result of our cultures less active lifestyle and poor diet, not to mention the lack of properly preparing our youth with the tools necessary to address the solution. This problem is worsened because of poor funding or budget cuts.

With these needs not being properly met, we are creating the biggest health program that our society has ever seen and it will continue to grow!  We will begin to see more teens with emotional and psychological effects, in addition to life-threatening conditions that include diabetes, high blood pressure, heart disease, sleep problems and cancer among others.  If our schools, parents and government are unable to address this problem then who is? We at IRON feel this responsibility falls on us, the fitness community, because we can serve as a community resource center, being that most gyms have the knowledge and resources to serve as a mecca to help take on such a huge problem.

Starting on 22nd of January, IRON will launch the first of a year long effort to “Fight Childhood Obesity!!  This program will be a free two-hour workshop held on the third Saturday of the month. The goal is to get both parent and child informed by providing a lecture and a physical workout.  This will get both parent and child in a habit of staying active and receiving the correct knowledge from trained professionals. We at IRON feel that building a STRONGER community starts with US, and helping to address our neighbor’s needs. So please come out and help us “Fight Childhood Obesity”!!!

“WE CARE JOB FAIR”

Free booths for businesses that are hiring!!

The “We Care Job Fair” is a community-wide event organized to help those who are out of work or whose businesses have failed.  It is also a way for employers to identify an intelligent, experienced pool of potential employees at little or not cost.

Last year’s fair attracted 500 applicants and 50+ companies and organizations. It was a huge success. Reviews from both employers and attendees were superb. The economy has not improved, so we are building on last year’s success to produce an even more effective connection for job seekers and employers.

The “We Care Job Fair” is an outstanding opportunity to support your community in a meaningful and timely way. The modest cost of sponsorship will ensure that this job fair can reach out to job seekers and qualified candidates at at no cost to them. It will also provide your company with community-wide exposure.

The fair is scheduled from 9am - 2PM at a venue to be selected shortly. It represents a unique collaboration led by the Kehillat Israel Business Network, Sinai Temple, Temple Beth Am, Temple Emanuel and Congregation Kol Ami in partnership with Jewish Vocational Service, the Jewish Federation of Greater Los Angeles, Jewish Family Service, the LA Jewish Chamber of Commerce, and the Board of Rabbis of Southern California.

We anticipate 800-1000 qualified job seekers from throughout greater Los Angeles (including the Valley) who represent an array of industries including financial services, legal, education, sales & marketing, accounting, and more, to be in attendance.

Please contact me for more information or to confirm your support.

Thank you so much for your consideration,

Matt Davidson,

GIVE A GIFT, MAKE A DIFFERENCE:
BOYS AND GIRLS CLUBS of SANTA MONICA PARTNERS WITH KOODOOZ TO DO GOOD FOR HOMELESS YOUTH

A night without a home. . . On any given evening  there are approximately 50 homeless families with children in Santa Monica. To raise awareness around youth homelessness the Boys & Girls Clubs of Santa Monica and KooDooZ hosted a “Night without a Home” last Friday. Over 100 Club Kids, volunteers and members of the community came together for a thoughtful discussion and activities around every-day actions we can take to help those in need. The event was held outdoors on the basketball courts behind the main Clubhouse. It was a fitting venue for a talk on homelessness as the fog rolled in and attendees shared blankets and coats to keep warm.

Special guest speaker Jonas Corona, just 7-years old, shared how he has assembled 1,500 backpacks filled with supplies with his organization “Love in The Mirror” for kids experiencing homelessness. Ehecatl Rojas of Los Angeles Youth Network (LAYN), which serves local homeless youth throughout the county, shared characteristics of children in distress and made suggestions for supporting this vulnerable population as part of the discussion. Concerned Club members, some not much older than Jonas, had plenty of questions on what they could do to help.

"Not since the Great Depression have so many kids stood at poverty's door," shared Lee Fox, founder of KooDooZ.  "The purpose of the event is to expose the harsh realities of youth homelessness and also to give kids smarter ways to address this humanitarian challenge," added Fox. Located in Santa Monica, KooDooZ is a cause-based social networking site for "KDZ" (friends , students and agents of change) who aspire to make the world a better place.

After the discussion Club members assembled care packages with handmade cards, personal journals and blankets to be donated to LAYN. Volunteers from local businesses including Yoga for Change, Le Merigot Hotel, Muselli Commercial Realtors, Reside Architecture, Brand Culture, and the Santa Monica Chamber of Commerce came out to help with the care packages and to learn along with the Club Kids.

To wrap up the insightful evening participants pulled out more blankets and watched “The Pursuit of Happyness,” starring Will and Jayden Smith. The movie is based on the true story of Chris Gardner , a father who struggled to protect his son from the realities of homelessness they experience after a family crisis.  By 10 p.m. as the movie ended, participants were grateful for the shared experience . . . and to be able to head to their own homes for the night.

According to the National Law Center on Homelessness and Poverty 1.35 million children are likely to experience homelessness in a given year (2007). "The Boys & Girls Clubs of America has always offered a safe and affordable place for kids to discover their potential to 'be great' and do great things," remarked Aaron Young, CEO of The Santa Monica Boys & Girls Club.  “I think it is important for our members, families and the community at large to understand more about this population and what we can do collectively to make a difference.”

Route 66 - To - California Receives Award

Hello everybody!

It's been a while since I've sent any updates, but I've got some news I wanted to share with everyone.

Every year the Will Rogers Awards honor those people, places, and businesses who do their best to establish, preserve, and extend the history of Route 66.  This past Saturday, June 19th, they were held near Joplin, Missouri.

I was unable to attend because I'd been contacted by the "Mother Road Tour," one of the biggest motorcycle tours of Route 66 all year.  It seems that after so many years without a Route 66 "Finish Line", they were ecstatic about our restoration of the "End of the Trail" sign and wanted to meet me when they reached the Santa Monica Pier.  Unfortunately, they'd be arriving on June 19 the same day as the Will Rogers Awards, so I asked my Dad to go to the awards in my place.  I welcomed the Mother Road Tour that morning, and spent the rest of Saturday promoting Route 66 from our tiny booth on the pier.

I'm happy to say that I got a call later in the day from the Will Rogers Awards informing me that in less than one year of operation, from a booth that is only 6 foot by 3 feet, my company "66-to-Cali" had won the "New Business of the Year Award" for 2010!  UNBELIEVABLE!!!

I don't have to tell you how ecstatic I am to receive this award, or how much it means to me for all the hard work we've put into promoting the history of Route 66 in Santa Monica and the USA.  I wanted to thank all of you for your support, friendship, and words of encouragement over the last year.  Jessica and I have basically sacrificed every minute of our lives to promote this road and the goodness of this country lately, so to now be recognized for our efforts means so much to me.

The frosting on the cake is that with my Dad at the awards ceremony and with the information that I was going to be winning the award, I had an opportunity to write an acceptance that recognized his part in everything that's happened for us.  It was my Dad that first took me out on Route 66 back in 1985, and it was my Dad that taught me how important a strong work ethic is.  He instilled in me a love for this country and the importance of being honest and kind with others, even when they don't return it.  Simply put, if it wasn't for my Dad, this would have never happened.  The fact that he accepted the award in my absence gave me a perfect opportunity to have the host read those very things in my speech to those attending and to wish him in the grandest way a "Happy Father's Day!"  I want to thank all of you for making this possible.  If it wasn't for all of your friendship, understanding, excitement, and support, we never could have made  "66-to-Cali" the success that it is becoming.  Thanks again to all of you and may God Bless you more than you can ever imagine!

Your pal on the pier,
